You Can't Master Internet Marketing Until You Become Good At Communicating

By Mike Bosch

When you are a novice to Internet marketing, the field can appear very intimidating, especially if you don't possess any knowledge of the field. You've maybe already browsed through many articles and forum posts that are full of information on how to be the next "big thing". The items on these lists probably all seem contradictory.

One list will say that becoming an IM success is all about being patient. Another is going to say that you should have plenty of business savvy. Still, others will say that creativity is the key to wild and fantastic success. And don't forget about all of the pages telling you that the software package they offer is what will help you become an Internet marketing success.

Know this fact: The rest of these things are essential (not so much the software, but the others). You must have patience, business savvy and creativity if you desire to be a success. But none of those things are going to matter if you are unable to distinctly communicate all of them to the people you want to purchase from you.

Good communication means more than merely having a fantastic sales page. All you need for that is the money to employ a talented copywriter. A beautiful website and lengthy FAQ are not what you need for good communication. A good web site designer and writer can do those things. If you wish to be a good communicator, you have to master interpersonal communication skills, not merely straightforward copywriting. So what is it that you need to do?

1. Answer every e-mail you get in 24 hours or less. This isn't a joke. Your response doesn't need to be long. All you have to do is tell the original writer that you have read the email and will be answering it fully soon. Try includuding a reference to something the other person has written when you do this. This is what will tell the person that you actually go through every email you got and are not an autoresponder.

2. Don't let the telephone ring and ring. Being a call screener is lame. Whenever your phone starts ringing, pick it up by the third ring. Do this even if you really have no desire to talk to the person calling you. You'll be glad to find out that there is an exemption to this certain rule. You do not have to answer your calls 24 hours a day. Rather, have clear business hours during which you will be available to answer the phone. These business hours should be displayed conspicuously on your site and included in your voice mail message also. And, naturally, each caller who leaves a message deserves to have his call returned.

3. Ensure that the people you send messages and emails to really have gotten them. This indicates to the your customer that you value him or her. It will endear you even further if you say something like, "Is there anything that I can be more detailed about?" so that, if they have queries, you can answer them.
