Is It Worth Marketing On Twitter?

By Tracy Flowers

Several years ago, there was a huge campaign on Twitter marketing tools. It was believed that Twitter was one of the better ways to grow a list and to get folks to buy the products you are promoting. But the question is, were any of those tools that were promoted, actually doing you any good? In this article, we will discuss Twitter marketing and if it is even worth it for you to get into it.

Like many of you, when all the tools came out to help online marketers build a big Twitter following that you could promote to, I decided to try it out. I joined programs that promised to get me followers on Twitter and bought software tools to help advertise my products. In total, I think I paid for about 8 software programs to help with my Twitter marketing adventure.

One of these programs was an automatic 'people follower' on Twitter with the intention that some of those people would follow me back. Next there was the Twitter marketing tool that would un-follow those who were not following me. This way I could be following Twitter users who might follow me back. Amongst other programs I purchased, there was one tool which automatically tweeted a Multi Level Marketing blog post just as soon as it was posted to my blog.

And when I began using all of these programs the results seemed to be amazing since they all did exactly what they said they would do. I was rapidly brought down to earth when I looked at my spreadsheet and saw that I wasn't actually pulling in any money! Daily I would post about ten blog entries knowing that they would then automatically be displayed on Twitter as well. Then I discovered a way to have all the blog entries done for me automatically, assuming that the more posts I would have the more people who would see them.

The results of my efforts are: In three years, I was able to gain a Twitter following of roughly ten thousand individuals. And though you may think that is great, just wait. In the same 3 year period, my Twitter account accumulated more than 15,000 blog posts that had links to my affiliate advertisements.

Apart from that, I did no extra promotion for that blog, as a matter of fact I didn't even ping the new blog entries to see how good Twitter was could be. Well, you can't say that 3 years isn't long enough to get decent results but using Twitter I only got 2 - 4 visitors each day to my blog. My affiliate earnings from 2 sales was $47 and to that you can add $8.65 Adsense revenue - very dismal all around!

Basically, having almost 10,000 followers on Twitter using all these programs will not give you the results you want. At the end of the day I'm now out of pocket for the Twitter tools I paid for because my dollar return was so small. Last, I cannot personally recommend using automatic software tools as a financially viable means of promoting on Twitter.
