An Overview On Car Battery Recycling Phoenix

By Angel Dudley

Many car owners have to dispose off their car batteries after they are worn out at one point or another. Worn out batteries can no longer be used on cars. To get rid of batteries you no longer use, it is advisable to follow the set regulations on disposal and recycling. This is unlike other products that people often dispose off as they wish. Before learning about car battery recycling Phoenix residents should take their time to understand about the entire process.

Car owners should fully understand the risks that come with improper disposal of any battery they no longer use. They contain very harmful metals and chemicals like lead, mercury and acid. When disposed off in landfills and burned, the harmful metals can cause long term respiratory problems and other conditions in humans and animals. The corrosive battery acid could also cause unexpected injuries to people.

When it comes to recycling, there are several options available. The most important thing is to carry out enough research to get programs or companies that recycle batteries in your locality. Dealers or companies that sell batteries should also be consulted. This is because they are most likely to know where to properly dispose off the batteries. Some also have their own programs where car owners are charged a small fee.

If you cannot find any disposal program in your area, contact your city's or town's municipal waste department and get o know whether they have any program available to recycle batteries. Most local waste departments have put in place regulations and systems that help residents dispose off the batteries they no longer need at specific places. You can either drop off the batteries at designated centers or have them picked up by recyclers.

Battery recycling involves four main procedures. First, the disposed batteries are placed in a machine called a hammer mill which crushes them into pieces. The debris is then hauled into a large container with water where separation of plastic, acid and lead occurs. The acid dissolves into the water making it easy to extract, the light plastic floats while the lead sinks to the bottom.

Once the separation has occurred, plastic fragments floating in the recycle container are collected and washed to clean off acid and other harmful chemicals. A blower is then used to dry them off before being sent to an extruder which melts the fragments into one under high temperature and pressure. The recycled plastic is then cut into smaller pellets that are sold to companies that manufacture plastic products or battery manufacturers.

Extraction of the liquid solution that contains all components is then done. This is followed by treatment using a neutralizing solution that helps convert the sulfuric acid to sodium sulfate which is a salt. The water that remains after extraction is then treated and tested to meet clean water regulations before being used. It is important to note that some recyclers first extract the sodium sulfate to sell it to manufacturing companies in need.

The last step involves the extraction of lead which collects in dense form at the bottom of the mixture. The lead is then placed in a furnace which heats it to molten form to get rid of impurities that float. The pure form is sold to companies that manufacture batteries. With proper information on car battery recycling Phoenix residents can properly dispose off batteries that they no longer need safely.
