Your Comprehensive Guide To Becoming A Professional Writer

By Raymond Walter Rodriguez

For a long time, people have dreamed of working from home. Doing something to avoid the pain of going into the office every day. Now, it appears that day has come. What is this wonderful job that more and more people are tapping into? Writing! Because there is so much demand today for competent writers, it's easier than ever to find some consistent work. In this article you'll learn exactly what you need to do to build up your skills and start making some real money.

To begin with, you've got to write on a daily basis. Obviously, the more you write, the better. It's like playing golf or something. The only way to improve is to play. But unlike sports, you won't strain your brain if you write too much. You'll just keep getting better and better. In this first phase, shoot for writing about a thousand words a day. It may seem like a lot, but you'll be surprised how quickly you move up to this level.

How much is a thousand words? It's really not that much. Maybe a couple articles, or a couple essays on something interesting. If you struggle for a while, don't worry. Rome wasn't built in a day, and it's going to take time. Just keep writing about something, anything, until you reach that thousand words. Pretty soon it will happen quicker and quicker.

Next thing you'll need to do is start publishing them. The easiest way would be to get a free blogging account. Just start writing and publishing every day. The reason for this is that when you write knowing that nobody is going to read your stuff, you might never improve. But when you write knowing in the back of your mind somebody else is going to read this, you'll have a lot more focus. It's a bit scary at first, but you'll get used to it.

After you've become a blogging expert, it's time to start writing for article directories. These are a bit tougher because your articles will be looked over by human editors. It's not like a blog where you can publish anything you want. This will further sharpen your focus and increase your writing skill. When you choose topics to write on, think of the end reader in mind. Give them some valuable piece of information. Make it worth their while to read what you write.

Now you're ready to sort through all your stuff. If you've been writing for a couple months, you should have at least five to ten articles that are pretty good. You can use these to build out your portfolio. You'll need your own website, but this is pretty easy. Wordpress is a good content management system. It's easy, free and there are plenty of online tutorials.

You're almost there. You've got the skills, and the portfolio. All you've got to do is start applying for jobs. There's tons of sites out there filled with people looking for freelance writers just like you. Just apply to as many jobs as you can, point people to your portfolio, and wait for clients. You'll start getting paid before you know it.
